It is shown that, within the framework of the extended neoclassical theory, for a tokamak there exists a relationship between the normalized thermalenergy content, β, and the normalized plasma current, 1/q. This relationship, which depends essentially only on plasma fuelling, is a generalization of the usual Bennett relation and it is of importance for tokamak confinement and heating. © 1993 Società Italiana di Fisica.
