The saturation dynamics of a high gain single passage FEL is reproduced by means of an analytical model based on Bloch-type equations, similar to those governing the physics of conventional lasers. The main results of the paper is the proof that the evolution from small to strong signal regime can be described in terms of the logistic function, whose validity is extended to the oscillator regime.
