The propagation of light and charged-particle beams through optical systems can be treated within the context of a unifying formalism, which, exploiting the Hamiltonian nature of the evolution of both the light ray and particle coordinates as well as the consequent symplectic character of the associated transfer map, takes advantages from the exponential representation of such maps and appropriate analytical and numerical techniques.
