A compact THz Free Electron Laser (FEL) is being used to perform irradiation of biological samples to investigate possible genotoxic effects. In order to evaluate the exact radiation dose absorbed by the single components of the samples it is necessary to study the optical properties of the samples, separating the contributions to the radiation attenuation coefficient coming from absorption and from diffusion. Spectroscopic measurements have been performed on different biological samples, comparing the experimental results with theoretical models.
