Abstract

An analytical model is presented which allows one to compute the electromagnetic behavior of a long cylinder with transverse cuts, subject to a transient magnetic field. The cuts can be modeled in different shapes, such as a butt joint, overlapped, or tapered. The thick cylinder is split into a number of infinitely thin layers on which the generalized Ohm equation for linear current density is solved once the vector components of each electromagnetic quantity are developed into a Fourier series. The model is applied to compute the stray field in the cut region and the electrodynamic loads on the cylinder for several possible cut shapes. This allows one to find the best cut arrangement in the design of the stabilizing shell of a fusion device. © 1998 IEEE.
