This article analyzes the magnetic field dependence of the Fiske steps in a small Josephson junction having a peaked critical current density distribution along the direction orthogonal to the field. The maximum current of the resonant states is computed in the case of a periodic and a nonperiodic distribution of the peaks in the current density along the junction. It is observed that the maximum amplitude of the Fiske steps and the magnetic field at which they occur are affected by the nonperiodic peak distribution. These results are discussed in connection with parallel networks of junctions coupled by negligible inductances. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
