Analytical estimate of stochasticity thresholds in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam and φ

Concepts involving the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are addressed, focusing on the notions of inverse scattering and soliton theory. For this purpose, two models are considered. The first one is an infinitely extended Fermi, Pasta, and Ulam (FPU) model, and the other is the so called φ4model. It is shown that the thresholds of both models are in remarkable agreement with the available numerical estimates.
