Asbestos and asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are classified as hazardous waste since they are responsible of harmful clinical pathologies, such as long cancer and mesothelioma. Among the inertization processes already developed, thermal treatment of ACM allows the modification of crystalline structure and, in case of vitrification processes, contributes to the formation of amorphous glass. Microwave based thermal treatment are demonstrate many indisputable advantages, such as more rational energy use and and simplification of the process. The present study verified the effective feasibility of microwave thermal treatment on asbestos-containing materials using a high power open cavity and performing the energy and economic balance of the setup process.
