The interest towards the evaluation of the biomass potential, and the assessment of the hydrogen by solid biofuel, springs from the observation that biomass is today presented as one of the most promising renewable sources, both in terms of energetic contribution and socio-economic influence over the territory. In addition, the interest of Italy for the biomass exploitation is justified by the strongly weak energetic production, the consistent presence of agricultural residues, the huge amount of forest and agro-industrial by-products, which require an ecologically correct disposal, by the 3-4 million hectares of abandoned agricultural lands and. finally, the necessity of a deep maintenance and reconversion of the forest patrimony. The study presents the evaluation of the biomass potential in the Italian provinces, which is suitable for hydrogen production. To this purpose the study offers an infonnatic methodology that, on the basis of a preliminary evaluation of the biomass, existing in the investigated territory, leads besides the density of the biomass availability also to the determination of the hydrogen qantitative so to determinate the number and the fundamental characteristics of the plants that could be realised, evaluating the respective cost benefits as well. For this scope, taking into account the possible applicative aims of the study, it has been developed an analytical and specific methodology aimed to quantify the residues which could be usefully converted into energy and to evaluate the relevant potential. An hydrogen data bank has been realised whose structure is based on archives relevant to the minimum territorial unit, formed by the yearly available official data at provincial level. So far the mentioned data bank results formed by 103 provincial archives.
