Assessment of the thermal comfort conditions in an high efficiency energy renovation of an Italian school building

Abstract

The Tito Maccio Plauto School represents an exemplary case of the obsolete and poor energy efficiency Italian building. The building went was recently renovated to reduce the heating energy consumption by 75%, as targeted by the School of the Future EU FP7 Project. The aim of the project was the demonstration of the energy renovation versus nearly zero targets with competitive costs. Also the improvement of the indoor environment quality was an issue to address. This paper presents the results of the environmental monitoring before renovation. The campaign was carried out during winter 2012: measurements were implemented according to relevant standards and the microclimate indicators calculated. Reference rooms were equipped with sensors collecting data in continuum, spot measurements were taken through thermal images. The campaign provided details about the actual environmental performance; moreover the analysis gave important indications to address the energy measures, taking into account thermal and environmental comfort criteria.
