Behavior of thin film materials under γ irradiation for astronomical optics

Abstract

A set of optical coating materials for astronomical and space applications were submitted to γ irradiation at the 60Co radioisotope source (ENEA-Casaccia Research Center) in order to simulate the hostile radiation environment in which optical instrumentation is working. Firstly, samples were submitted to 50 Gy irradiation dose, typical of Low Earth Orbit missions. Successively, coatings were irradiated at doses between 1000-8400 Gy characterizing interplanetary mission expositions.
