Cementation process for the conditioning of liquid radioactive wastes produced during fuel element reprocessing

Abstract

In the past years many studies have been carried out in ITREC Plant, located in ENEA - Trisaia Research Centre, in the field of nuclear fuel reprocessing. During these activities high and low level liquid wastes were produced and stored in a special area of tanks, named Waste-1. A specific plant, SIRTE (Integrated System for Effluents Raising and Treatment) was built, in order to condition the liquid wastes, composed of fission products, beta and gamma emitters. This plant is based on the process of cementation. In this work, the characteristics of the plant, the phases of conditioning process and the radiological monitoring program, performed inside the plant, during the campaigns of cementation, are shown.
