Characterization of the leaching behaviour of lead and zinc primary smelter slags

Abstract

The problem of the Pb/Zn primry smelter slag disposal could be positively solved through their reus in the civil engineering and in the building industry. The study on the evluation of the environmentl impact caused by their reuse is basically connected with characterization of the slags nd investigtion on the mechanisms of release of pollutants. In this study attention has been focalized on the leaching mechanisms in different scenarios and on a comparison of the paramenters which govern their release on a short and long term basis. The long term release to deionized water (in order to simulate rain water) in the presence of sand has ben compared with data derived from the release tests indicated by the Italian regulations.
