Classical confinement times for shaped pinch equilibria

Classical particle and energy confinement times are calculated for large-aspect ratio pinch equilibria with shaped cross-sections. The resistivity profile is taken to be consistent with the assumption of stationary electromagnetic fields. It is shown, for a constant current density profile, that confinement is always made worse by a non-circular cross-section. © 1994 IOP Publishing Ltd.
