The Centro Nazionale per i Materiali di Riferimento (CNMR) was established within the framework of activities undertaken in Italy over the past few years to ensure the quality of products. CNMR, jointly with other agencies devoted to standardization, instrument calibration, accreditation, and certification of Italian laboratories, is part of the Italian Quality System, an organization created in Italy for facilitating the free circulation of goods. The policy of CNMR is to coordinate Italian activities in the field of reference materials: education, studies, research, production, information, distribution. CNMR operates as a liason between Italian laboratories and international organizations. Another aim of CNMR is to offer Italian laboratories a tool for traceability of measurements and a focal point for the discussion of topics concerned with the quality of analysis. The structure and objectives of this new center are outlined in this communication. © 1992.
