We discuss a general method of analysis for the Compton backscattering of FEL intracavity photons. We present general formulae for the photon yield both for linac-based and recirculated FELs. We also discuss Compton backscattering of X-ray FEL photons produced by high gain device and analyze the possibility of realizing a γ-ray facility with photon energy ranging from 70 to 800 MeV.
