The use of scattering factors is recommended in the dosimetry protocols to account for the different scattering properties of the different phantom materials. In the present work the scattering factors, ESC, are determined by Monte Carlo simulation for PMMA, Polystyrene and Solid Water. The energy range considered is from the Co-60 gamma-ray quality to 24 MV accelerator beam. These values are compared with the ESC values that can be calculated, through the tissue-air ratio data, by means of an expression given in the AAPM protocol. The ESC values determined by the present Monte Carlo procedure are more accurate than the analogous values which can be obtained by the conventional expression reported in AAPM protocol. They can be utilised also in a wider range of experimental conditions.
