The effect of lithium doping on microstructure development and phase transition of CoO was investigated. In the first stage of sintering lithium doping increased the compact densification rate by Li2O evaporation. Then, with increasing sintering process, grain growth being faster in lithiated samples than in pure cobalt oxide, LixCo1-xO sintered less rapidly than undoped cobalt oxide. Lithium doping also stabilised CoO against transition from rock salt to spinel phase. © Società Italiana di Fisica.
