We analyze the problems associated with the generation of coherent radiation by an e beam, traversing an undulator magnet, with an initial energy-phase correlation. The mechanisms of the process are explained and the role played by the bunching is clarified. The effect of the correlation on the stimulated part of the emission is also discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
