We present a comparison between numerical, analytical and "empirical" treatments of the evolution of a high gain FEL, including the effect of inhomogenous broadening. We show that the gain degradation induced by the beam quality is remarkably well reproduced by simple formulae. This favors a semianalytical treatment of the FEL dynamics including the pulse propagation and transverse mode effects.
