In this paper, we show that the pulse propagation effects in high gain single pass free electron laser dynamics, from small signal to saturation, can be accurately modelled by using semi-analytical formulae. The method, which extends previous results, allows a fast and reliable tool of analysis of these devices along with a deeper understanding of the underlying physics. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.
