The production and screening of metallic impurities in the FTU scrape-off layer have been studied by inserting a titanium target in the plasma periphery. Deuterium sputtering reasonably accounts for the impurities produced, while their retention in the SOL improves when the last closed magnetic surface is approached. © 1995, All rights reserved.
