Environmental requirements, regarding energy utilization, concern more and more railway transport that in the past had been considered scarcely polluting. Changed scenery is related to the necessity, nowadays recognized at world level, of reducing emission of greenhouse gas and other unhealthy substances. Significant results can be obtained in the field of light diesel traction by introducing the dual mode and hybrid traction concepts that are assumed to be combined in a new generation of the "Minuetto" train. Onboard energy management turns to be more complex while the proposed technology allows to eliminate the use of diesel traction under overhead contact line, exploiting an higher efficiency of the electric traction, the breaking-energy recovery during each operational phase and an optimum use of the diesel engine on non-electrified lines. The advantages consist in reduced emissions and consumptions. The proposed choice is moreover sustainable for the operational company, from an economical point of view, as managing savings are able to compensate an higher buying cost of the train.
