Monitoring of the mechanical behavior of a composite material with high performance by fbg sensors

Abstract

This paper aims to verify performance of a measuring deformation technique based by optical fibers sensors (FBG) applied to fiber-reinforced concrete product destined to operate in a marine environment. A first step of this research work was carried out in a climatic chamber by accelerated aging tests on a composite material object made in a small scale if compared to the final. The second part of this test was carried out in the real marine environment for a period of four months on a boat realized with a basalt fiber reinforced concrete, about 6 meters length. All data collected have been analyzed and have provided information on the mechanical deformations, net of thermal effects, with reference to the monitored points. The analysis carried out for either the laboratory and on field experimentation has shown that, in the monitored critical points, the calculated mechanical strains are smaller than the thermal ones. From the observation of the results it can be seen that the strains measured in the climate chamber, though related to a greater simulated period, are smaller than the on field measured ones, due to increased environmental stress on the boat (waves and weather).
