Abstract

Only occasionally the seismicity of a region is completely characterized by the historical record of events listed in the available seismic catalogs. Paleoseismological methods of investigation offer an unvaluable tool to extend for knowledge beyond the historical threshold. This paper provides at first a collection of criteria for the identification of areas with potential presence of seismites. Seismicity and neotectonic features are recognized as the most preminent criteria, but often lack of these characters cannot be considered conclusive. Then follows a critical overview of seismites and paleoseismological techniques. Most of the features taken into account are related to surface faulting. However, liquefaction, gravity features and coseismic deformations have proved to be very helpful in a few instances. -from English summary
