A phase-unifying (PU) mirror as output coupler of unstable resonators applied to high-gain, short-pulse XeCl lasers has been realized and tested. A high-mode volume, nearly diffraction limited beam has been extracted from the XeCl laser by using a PU-unstable resonator of magnification M=6.6. The evolution of the output beam intensity distribution along a propagation distance of about 30 m has been tested.
