Solid state reactions of V

The solid state reactions of V75Si25mixture during mechanical alloying were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Two different pathways of V/Si reaction under different milling conditions were observed, i.e., high energy milling led to formation of intermetallic compounds while relatively low energy milling resulted in formation of amorphous phase. The thermal responses of the milled products were studied through differential thermal analysis. The thermodynamics and kinetics related to the different phase transition are discussed . Finally, the effect of air contamination on phase transformation in both mechanical alloying and annealing processes was investigated.
