SPONTANEOUS EMISSION IN CHERENKOV FEL DEVICES.

Abstract

A careful analysis of the spectral properties has been carried out in order to obtain a correct description of the laser signal start-up and to indicate other possible modes of operation, as already developed, e. g. , for the undulator FELs in the higher harmonic or off-axis operation. An analysis has also been directed to deciding the best waveguide design for a Cherenkov FEL operation. Dielectric-filled configurations and surface wave configurations (slab) are discussed. The radiated spectrum for the filled cavity configuration indicates that a large number of modes are excited, and this makes the Cherenkov FEL mechanism rather noisy. In the spectrum for the single-slab configuration a single mode is clearly selected. The three-dimensional plot of the spectrum for the single- and double-slab configurations for an electron beam with finite transverse distribution is shown. The double-slab configuration allows emission along the whole beam portion, making this configuration the one best suited for the Cherenkov FEL operation.
