This work is aimed at investigating the storage ring free electron laser longitudinal dynamics. In particular we analyze the effects of the free electron laser interaction on the turbulent anomalous bunch lengthening due to the microwave instability. It is shown that the free electron laser interaction can counteract the microwave instability by simultaneously heating the e-beam, and by modifying the machine characteristic damping times.
