We investigate the interplay between storage ring beam dynamics and FEL. It is shown that the on-set of the FEL provide a modification of the longitudinal damping times of the e-beam mode distribution and may act as feedback to inhibit the growth of the instabilities of the microwave type. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
