Study of TLD-300 as a low dose detector, and a comparison with standard high sensitivity TLDs

Abstract

The peak 3 (P3) of TLD-300 was studied as a low dose TL dosemeter. Measurements showed that it is possible to reach, for the detection limit (L(D)), a value of 1.0 ± 0.3 μGy. The response of P3 to background radiation as well as its self-irradiation background were investigated. A reading cycle which allows peak 3 to be read and the TLD-300 to be annealed in the reader, has also been studied. This cycle allows at least 9-fold re-use of TLD-300 before annealing at 400°C for 1 h is necessary. The residual TL signal was 0.5% of the TL signal of the irradiated dosemeter. A slight decrease of the P3 TL signal with the number of irradiation/reading cycles has also been observed. The low dose response of P3 was compared with that of the commonly used high sensitivity Chinese detectors GR-206 and GR-207 and Harshaw detectors TLD-600H and TLD-700H, showing that P3 can be proposed as gamma low dose detector.
