Microstructural SEM observations have been carried out on samples of Ti irradiated by a Nd:YAG pulsed laser in the range of 10-40 J energy and 3-10 ms pulse length. The treatments were carried out, in a nitrogen atmosphere, on samples coated by graphite to allow the formation of nitrides and carbides as a consequence of laser irradiation. The morphology and distribution of the phases formed allowed information about the fluid dynamics within the melt pool to be obtained.
