The influence of different doping ions on the emission and scintillation characteristics of PbWO4scintillator was studied. In the case of Ce3+doping, efficient non-radiative recombination at Ce3+sites takes place resulting in a lower light yield and faster luminescence and scintillation response. Th4+doping shows all the positive features of trivalent ion doping used previously for PbWO4scintillator optimisation. Heavily La3+and Gd3+doped PbWO4crystals (up to several molar percent) a suppressed light yield and subnanosecond scintillation response. Finally, Tb3+and Pr3+doping results in dominant emission lines at 543 and 602 nm with decay times of about 650 and 61 μs at 295 K, respectively. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
