The research investigated the impact of γ radiation on high-quality paper that was previously subjected to vapours of hydrochloric acid (HCl) to induce acid hydrolysis and that were subsequently artificially aged. The deterioration of the treated paper was measured in terms of its optical properties, namely opacity and brightness and its mechanical strength expressed by tear resistance. The results confirmed previous research that the paper is sensitive to irradiation and darkened in colour as a result of it. Further, it could be shown that the paper samples after treatment with γ radiation undergo more severe degradation during artificial ageing, With respect to the resistance of the paper to insect attack, no significant difference was apparent between the reference samples and those subjected toγ radiation. © 2007 Saur.
